Giant Panda Page!
Welcome to GiantPandaPage.com!
Use the menu or search box on the left side of the page to explore the other pages of this site for information primarily about Giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca), but also about other related panda bear information as well! This panda website is still very new, and I will be adding more information whenever I have time.
Giant Pandas are loved all around the world, and a panda bear has been the symbol of the World Wildlife Fund since 1961. Easily recognized by their white coats and black markings around their eyes, legs, ears and shoulders, Giant pandas are members of the bear family, but have adapted a mostly vegetarian diet, feeding primarily on bamboo. Also unlike most bears, Giant Pandas do not hibernate.
Today the future of the giant panda species is unclear. Giant Panda bears are faced with several threats. Poaching is always a threat, and the forest habitat of the giant panda in southwest China is being reduced and fragmented. The panda populations are small and panda groups are isolated from each other.
Although habitat destruction is a big threat to pandas, there are people working to save the species from extinction. China has created more than 50 panda reserves, but they only serve to protect approximately 60 percent (1000 pandas) of the worlds panda population. Poaching is still a major threat to the Giant Panda outside of the reserve areas.
Thanks again for checking out the site, and check back often to see if I've made any progress in adding more panda related articles to the site. As I said, I plan to write about all things "panda" as I have time. :)
